1. Could American industrial growth have occurred without the industrial giants of the period? Why or why not?
Make sure to use specific examples from the lecture and reading to back up your argument.
2. By 1900, the United States had created an overseas empire. Was this empire a natural culmination of its
expansionist path at home? Explain, using specific examples of the type of territories that became part of this
empire. Explain why these territories were important to the American government and society. Why was the
Spanish-American War ?a splendid little war? for the United States? Was the creation of our Empire and the
Spanish-American War morally, ethically, and politically justified? Why or why not? Make sure to use examples
from the lecture and reading to back up your argument.
3. How did the Treaty of Versailles make World War II inevitable? Why did the U.S. Senate fail to ratify the treaty?
Be as detailed as possible and be sure to discuss the specifics of the treaty. What would you have done at the Paris
Peace Conference to make sure that something like World War II would not occur? Make sure to use examples
from the lectures and reading to back up your argument.

in, both, the reading and the lecture.

? Your heading should only include your name, the date, and title of your paper. Do not use white space to make
your paper longer.
? You are allowed to use outside sources with the exception of certain sources. (See list of prohibited sources.)
? You are restricted to THREE (3) small quotes from your sources. This essay needs to be your thoughts written in
your own words.
? You MUST include a Works Cited page with your esssay.
? No matter where your information comes from, you MUST cite it. Failure to cite your sources will constitute
plagiarism and will be result in a 0 being given for the paper. Use parenthetical documentation using the author?s
name and the page number of the source. (ie// (Smith 25) ).
? The dropbox you submit your essay to will check it for plagiarism and give you a similarity rating. It will be
checked against published work, internet websites, and papers submitted by students worldwide. YOUR ESSAY
NEEDS TO HAVE A SIMILARITY RATING OF 20% OR LOWER. IF IT IS OVER 20% AND IT IS
NOT DUE TO QUOTATIONS OR PROPERLY CITED, I WILL NOT GRADE IT.
? This is a college level essay and I expect college level writing. Your essay needs to be proofread and free of
grammatical errors. Along with this, you need to make sure that you use college-level vocabulary. (ie// do not use
words such as ?til,? ?sorta,? ?kinda,? forms of netspeak, etc.) Part of your grade for this essay is dependent on
making sure it is written on a college level and is as readable as possible.
